Sustainable tourism and etiquette

All the charm of Meghauli Village relies on the authenticity of its culture and its rich natural environment. Please help maintaining the uniqueness of this place by being a sustainable tourist. Some recommendations are:

· Don’t give money, sweets or pens to the kids in the villages. You will only promote a begging culture. If you want to help, look for local NGOs to make a donation or check the volunteer section in this guide.

· You can help a lot to reduce the plastic waste by not buying bottled water. Most of the homestays and restaurants have safe filter water or you can bring a refillable bottle and water purifying tablets and treat the water yourself.

· Nepalese society is a very conservative one and Tharus are not exception. Wear simple clothing that covers your knees and take your shoes when entering a house or temple.

 · In a place where tourism is starting to develop foreigners are looked with great curiosity in the streets. Just smile and say “Namaste” and you will receive a warm welcome.

· Always ask before taking photos to the people and, if possible, show it to them. They enjoy a lot to see their faces on the little screen!

· Many kids and young people study English at school to improve the opportunities in their lives, but they don’t get the chance to practice in real life. Spending a few minutes talking with them can help a lot with their language skills and is a great way to interact with the locals.

· Support the local economy. Eat in different places, buy handicrafts and local products, hire local services and stay at homestays instead of foreign owned resorts.

· Respect and protect the rich flora and fauna of the area. While in the jungle carry out all your rubbish and never feed the animals.
